When I teach, train or supervise young therapists, I ask them to imagine everything through the image of two opposing chairs. One is the client’s and the other is ours. I also ask them to get really good at organizing where the conversation belongs. Are we considering the client chair? The clinician’s chair? Or the space between? Below is some of my thinking about the nature of the therapist’s chair.
